AUM is a DBW 150 BHP engine, not sure if its vvt or not.
You'll see a very nice performance gain if you get remapped because I believe AUM engines came with K03 sport turbos.

Remapping is basically the modern day version of "chipping" your engine. Chipping is still around but i wouldn't recommend it for your car. Basically a specialist tuner plugs into the serial port in your dash (behind the panel under the stereo) and adjusts timing/boost within safe margins to make your car a hell of a lot faster.
Most popular choices seem to be:
revo http://www.revotechnik.com/uk/ukrevo.html
apr   www.goapr.co.uk
upsolute  http://www.upsolute.com/eng/index.html
The above tuners apply a pre-written software to your car and is done in minutes.
Another choice is a custom map tuned specifically for your car from:
Jabba www.jabbasport.com
AmD http://www.auto-amd.com/
With your car you can expect to see around 230 BHP (with the highest spec maps) and 240 BHP ish if you get that cat/downpipe.

I could go on for hours on this subject but those websites should keep you going for a while !

From looking at the upsolute website, it seems they do old-skool chipping as opposed to VAGCOM remapping - I'm gonna contact them to check though.  Maybe this is why they're so much cheaper (at ?275) ?

Tophuh, why don't you recommend chipping?

cheers,
Rich.

I just don't like the idea of having something soldered to the ECU when the same (and often better) results can be acheived without having to even lift the bonnet. Remaps are also more customisable.. and most manufacturers now offer switches to turn performance mode off.

Yeah - I've got the same reservations as you.  Shame 'cos upsolute are so cheap.

Jabba and Revo cost almost 500 quid  :-\
