Central locking + alarm Questions
« on: 05 January 2009, 12:38 »
I've decided to treat the car to a new alarm (well AN alarm...doesn't have one just now) and some central locking as opening doors for everyone when i get in is getting annoying.

I've decided to go for the toad ai606...original I know, but my question is what kind of central locking kit do I need to get for it to work with the new alarm?

Scrappy (ie 2nd hand) vw kit or one of those universal £25 jobs from the likes of ebay?

If the central locking is key activated will it/can it become remote activated when the alarm is fitted?

Sorry for the stupid questions...couldn't find much on this, search just brings up central locking problem threads.

I have the universal one in my car, its lasted for 2.5 years and its died. Not a bad length of time for a 15 quid kit!

The trouble with using original stuff is that its all old now, and you need to run vac pipes all over the car and odds are have to replace half the rubber seals. It gets pricey ;)

I got a cheap and cheerful alarm/immobiliser with shock/ultrasonics for 40 quid IIRC, it does the trick for remote central locking and beeps when it has too. If someone is determined enough to steal my car, they'll sure do it, regardless of what alarm I had fitted!

£15...where did you buy that?

Yeah I saw that in your project thread....all those wires looked confusing as hell lol, nice work tho

Going to get the alarm fitted professionally for insurance certificate but want to get some central locking in beforehand.

If I can raid a mk2 of all the central locking parts and ensure all seals are good or replaced I should see years more life from it or is it just not worth the hassle?

Where does the power come from for the pump? Should i have a spare connector somewhere for it?...'89 8v 90spec

Got it from Maplin, they have offers on all the time.

Fitting an alarm is a doddle, yeah, there's hundreds of wires, but its very straightforward. I'd do a quote on your insurance and check if having a pro fitted Thatcham alarm actually reduces your premium - for me it was about 10 quid, so really wasn't worth the cost.
