Lumpy diesel first thing...

Ive noticed lately, in this cold weather that my glow plug light is taking longer to out, but once it has and i start my car it's very lumpy for a sec or two and ive noticed some smoke out the back :undecided:

during the day after this initial hesitation, it's absolutely fine, doesnt miss a beat, starts on the button everytime.

any ideas?

yep - diesels don't like the cold!

mine is exactly the same - smoke out the back is most likely a little bit water / frost

wait a few seconds longer after the glow plugs have gone out and make sure EVERYTHING is off - i.e fans, rear screen, lights etc so as to give you the most starting current available :afro:

yeah ive heard the battery power has to be at max, just abit embarrasing! lol

most cars are like it in the cold weather though so no need to get embarrassed lol

What gets me is how long it takes to have some hot air blowing out, unless the Missus is sitting beside me.  :wink:

lol - i know; it was -7 last night on the way back from Dai's and i just about got some warm air coming out about 4 miles from home (he lives 18 miles away!!)

that's why you need heated seats! give you heat whilst the engine warms up  :cool:

as said diesels will run "lumpy" in the cold, as diesel has a higher freezing point than petrol , plus the fact a diesel engine isn't as efficient until it has warmed up.  the main thing is to make sure the glow plugs are warm (light out) before you turn the key or get yourself a garage and keep your baby warm through the winter  :cool:
