mk2 golf gti 1.8 digi!!

Recently my car has been doing somthing ive never seen before
Its been idling normally since ive had her but now it idles at 1000 and ten surges up to 2000 and then back to 1000,then upto 2000 and back down all the time.
Any sugestions folks? is there some sort of idle control valve? if so what does this look like and where is it located?

is it 16v or 8v.... if its 8 the isv is on top of the rocker cover nearest to you next to the oil filer cap sort of lays on it with a rubber thing'y to hold it in place with a hose 1 end and a connecter the other end...

take it of 'its easy' clean it out with carb cleaner or replace it there not to cheap but you can get 1 from a scrappy.... should have a label with a code on it with a 'c' at the end...or audi 80's have them same with a 'd' ...i think mk3 8v gti has aswell ..

dont know about the 16v never had the pleasure of owning 1..

no probs m8...its a commen problem on 8v

while your at id suggest you carb clean the throttle body as gunk clogs it up. And any intake pipes, Give the trottle body a good srub with a tooth brush it will run sweet as it came out of the factory and you'll really notice a differance..

Digi = 8v.
Try replacing the blue water sensor. This can be the culprit of a multitude of running snags. But be sure to get a genuine VW one.

sounds like a throttle switch problem to me, check the idle switch underneath clicks when throttle shut, and the wires to the plug round the back have not snapped.
