K&N PANEL filters

Hello.

I'm thinking of replacing my paper filter with a K&N stock-replacement panel filter.  I don't really want a K&N57i because of the problems with oil from it fouling the MAF sensor.   Also, changing the panel filter is nice and easy for an auto-retard like me.  

Has anyone put in a K&N stock-replacement panel filter?  Has anyone got any opinions on this?

Only makes a difference if you drill the front and side (NOT engine side) of the airbox.

the panal filters need oil aswell so you we get the same oil fouling problem.......

although the oil does burn off it!

and at the end of the day carb cleaner will always get the oil off.......

as vr6 said richy, if you want any kind of gains (sound and maybe slight power/easier revving) youll have to drill the airbox as the standard mk4 intake suckes through a tiny 2" intake feed from behind the nearside headlight , no theard of any one drilling the bottom half of the airbox on a mk4 as yet, but if you quote the part number to vw and get a quote on a bottom half replacement, then if you do it and arent happy you can always put a standard bottom half back on, on the mk2's etc it seemd to make a difference on mine! . but on the mk4 as said earlier by vwsystems youll still encounter the same possible probs as fitting a 57i kit as the k+n panel filter is also 'oiled' so its your choice, i never had any probs with mine whilst it was on, the only reason ive sold it was because i felt the car ran 'pants' after the rebuild (but that was down to a faulty inlet camshaft position sensor) so i re fitted standard airbox along with sensor and runs fine now (all be it with a slight tappet noise due to a damaged tappet ) but i aint strippin then engine again just to change 1 tappet!! have fun richy the choice is vast and youll find a filter/induction kit that suits you!!

Cheers guys.  Might get a 57i, or full Carbonio CAI, or just not bother.  These are the only ways I'll actually notice any real difference.

Gonna get my car serviced soon, and if nothing needs sorting out I might get it Upsoluted.  I think my exhaust's on its way out so might replace that with a full Milltek system when it finally goes.

All just maybe's though!
