16V KR Rebuild....?
« on: 03 January 2009, 12:04 »
I have finally decided to remove my top manifold and Rocker cover of my 16V KR. With Rubjonny's help today I will be checking if the two dots on the cam pulley line up at tdc.

I just wanted to find out whether its simple to remove the head to de-cock it... and anything else that you guys may recommend.... I am hoping there is a step by step procedure to remove the drive chain, head e.t.c.

The car was running sluggish prior to this and finally decided to open into it... I messed around with the timing and still was sluggish, so now I am contemplating whether to just check the dots lining up and replacing the injectors or take the head out and re-work it.....

Thanks guys....

Taking the head off is not that difficult but not something to be considered lightly. You need to do a lot of prep first like getting ALL the tools and parts e.g. gasket sets, new head bolts etc.   Plus, all sorts of things can go wrong when taking the head off... A manifold stud could shear off for example. Therefore, unless you've got poor compression (get a test done), I wouldn't take the head off just to de-coke it.

In terms of a procedure, haynes has a very good step-by-step process.

IMO... Unless you've got smoke and/or poor compression, or head gasket issues, the sluggishness will probably be due to something much less serious like a temp sensor, timing, fuel pressure, the WUR, CO2 setting, or an ignition issue... Something like that.

Good luck!

just run her on v-power for a while, some fotre upper valve treatment, full service inc fuel filter, plugs. also look into the 'water trick'. that will clean the engine up a treat

Ok, there car is not smokey at all. Just very sluggish.. I will now just sand blast the rocker cover and top manifold and spray it, and then put it back on, or even just put in kent cams... not sure about the way to do it....

What is the water trick?

Thanks

use the search! once the engine is warm, you sip up water through a breather hose, effectively steam cleaning the bores.it sounds scary, but its not.

i did it on my old pb. 160k. once the head was off the bores and valves were as new

Hey sounds scary but promising. I searched for the process, but was unsuccessful. Can you please forward the link.

Thanks

that is utter bo11ox

how can you steam clean carbon off with 1 pint of water !!!!!!

i've seen loads of K series moters that have sucked ALL there cooland into the cylinder and there is soooo much carbon still in there

i have used injector cleaner instead of water and it cured a missfire (sticky valve) on a zetec motor

i personally wont be doing that to my golf
