gti vs tdi newbie buying guide
« on: 02 January 2009, 11:47 »
sorry guys
ive tried to search this topic.and cant find the overview answers i need

my old man is giving me grief over buying petrol-think victor meldrew on speed!! and wants me to justify why i want a mkv gti vs a tdi.

and to be honest with all the reviews the tdi gets why am i looking at a gti, other than fact i am a 43yr old still trying to realise/acheive that teen dream of a proper hot hatch.

i never managed first time around ,but i had a 1 mk3 gti for 9months when i was 27 and it was the best car i ever had, i loved it so a bit of nostalgia plays a part of going for the gti.

so..... pros and cons of each.?
is there much in it from a performance/owning/cost/maintenence point of view or is it do i want my hot hatch  or do i have a deisel??

thanks in advance
matsu

GTI all the way and I suspect being a GTI forum most people will say the same mate!

Diesel = more expensive than petrol for starters and is only really worth it if you do big mileage. The GTI has great fuel economy anyway; I regularly get 36, 37, 38mpg if im cruising on the motorway.

But when you plant your right foot, nothing will make you smile more than the GTI. Test drive both and you will see what I mean.

Im nearly 32 and still seriously into my hot hatches and will be forever. Nothing beats them.

And one more thing; who cares what your dad thinks. Surely daddy is not still making decisions for you?!!!! (Unless he is the one paying for it!!)

am thinking shouldnt have put the dad comment on there lmao!

i dont give a toss what he thinks really but he had a valid point that echoed a few others comments...

so i wanted to find out from some golf peeps who knew better than i do

wether the slight lack of oompf is compensated by the torque later up the speedo
wether the mpg was that different to warrant the option
wether the looks were that different, when i walk upto the car in the car park i wanna smile, will a tdi do that, i doubt it but i wanted confirmation.

and all them silly bits that matter when you buy a car.

i loved my previous gti and i know i want one again so thought i research it and see if its worth the extra dosh paying out for the gti!

thanks again for the input!

Agreed with the advice above - test drive them!

When I park in a supermarket, I park so the car's facing me when I return. Biggest smile on my face you'll ever see!

Have a look at both and compare them visually but drive them too. Believe me, once you've test-driven the GTI, all the fancy ideas of fuel-saving, mileage etc fly out the window.

For me, I've never bettered 35mpg motorway. Why? Because every opportunity I get, I can't resist flooring it.

Diesel is just plain not cool either . People have gone with me in my 1.4 petrol rather than a 1.9 tdi. Sounds better, feels better and you'll never regret it .
Not low enough mk5
Not on the road enough mk3

ETTO, as said take them for a test drive but i wouldnt bother with a std TDI, go with the GT170 as a comparrison as its alot closer to a GTI than the std TDI would be and around the same cash.

Your dad sounds just like my brother.. I usually consult him occasionally on stuff I do. So when I told him Im getting a Gti (he has the GTTDi) i had to sit and listen to hours of comments about how Im wasting my money, and should be saving etc etc..

So I went and got myself an R32! He very rarely comments on my decisions now.... esp after I let him borrow it from time to time
