I bought my oil from a dealer and it was a Castrol oil 5W30 longlife III, I think.

Might've been castrol GTX but can't be too sure.

EDIT: 1. Check your user manual; 2. search the forums

EDIT 2: Castrol Edge 5W-30 and Castrol SLX Longlife 3 is what the search engine has thrown up.

clicky

ok, cheers guys, toped up earlier today with the correct gear! (Castrol edge 5w 30)
Bit worried as I was on min, but no warning ping on the dash previously! :undecided:
But I only added half a litre and it topped it up to max!

I didn't get any oil in the boot with my second-hand car.

I've driven 165 miles on minimum with no perceivable deficit. A few days later, drove it to the dealer who didn't have any (suitable) oil in stock so topped it up for free. He found it used only a quarter of a litre.

I tend to recheck the oil level again a while after filling to let it settle down properly.

Perfect example why you should NEVER rely on the fluid level warning lights and check them all yourself. Some say weekly but I find that to be over kill and do mine every 2 weeks on a Sunday morning :)

I've always done this wherever possible. Sometimes I'm working at the weekend, in which case I'll do it the next weekend. All fluids and tyre pressures are regularly checked.

I also check everything a day before a long journey, like the recent trip to visit family. Checked everything on the Tuesday so there were no issues. Turned out the front two tyres were slightly underinflated. Promptly sorted that out.

I had the same problem on christmas eve and the only oil i could get was a 5w30 that was suitable for all vw petrol and diesel engines however it had no mention of longlife on it. Could this be an issue????

I wouldn't of thought it to be an issue as I think longlife is to just do with the dealer!?
Sounds like you got the same stuff as me, Castrol edge 5w 30 fully sinthetic for new Vw & Audi engines. Thats what I got recommended- done a good job so far, and its even got castrol on the engine oil cap!
