ABS light and other problems!
« on: 14 June 2004, 21:57 »
Hi All,

Well I've had 8 months of trouble free motoring in my golf(Mk3 8v GTI) which isn't bad but it's now started to develop multiple faults which are beginning to concern me a little.

Basically I got into my car after work last week when it had been really hot and turned on the ignition to notice the following faults:

1. The ABS light stayed on while the Airbag light operated normally(came on then off).
2. The handbrake light stayed on.
3. Air con didn't work(light didn't come on)
4. The blower didn't work at all.

I thought it was a fuse and but once I'd turned the engine off and on again, everything was back to normal.

Now the ABS light has been on for about 3-4 days and I have to admit I don't know for certain whether it's working or not as I haven't really had the opportunity to test it.

The car has also cut out a couple times over the last week while stopping or slowing down for roundabouts etc, which is a little concerning to be honest. It also wouldn't start for 2 minutes when I stopped to post a letter about a month ago then sprang into life.

This kind of sounds like the symptoms of that massive stalling thread but not quite, thats why I've started a new thread although I must admit I didn't read all 11 pages of it.

I'm a little reluctant to take it the stealership to be charged ?60 to plug it into a diagnostic machine if there's something obvious I could try first. I'm willing to have a go at these kinds of things myself so basically anything I can DIY to begin with the better.

As I know there's some bloody clever people on here who know their golfs, anyone got any ideas?

With regards to the ABS problem, it literally could be one of a few things. It could be a damaged/ dirty wheel sensor, or it could be the ECU or the pump.

I diagnosed mine with a VAG-com and still ended up spending a wad of cash on it without ever getting the light to go off!!!   :-[

I ended up wiring in a timer and a small bulb in order for it to pass it's MOT as I couldnt be bothered spending any more money on it!!

good luck

Cheers mate,

I'll probably buy myself a cable and see if I can get some error codes from it. I just don't want to take it to the stealership if it's something I can do, I'll have look this weekend if I have time.

Sorry to jump on your topic, mate....

Had my ABS diagnosed this morning (only(?) ?15) and got

'ABS Pump Out Of Tolerance'

which came back twice after it was deleted.

Any Ideas, please?

Also, bloke at garage said that without removing the pump, it would be impossible to find out which part no it actually is, but said would be around ?500 for the pump alone  :o  >:(

Can anyone tell me which pump is likely to be on a late '97R VR6 and how much they go for?
As at ?500 plus a couple of hours labour it's gonna be painful!?!?!?!

ABS Sucks!!!

if you phone the stealership with your vin number they can give you the part number but before you do check the wiring to the pump and from the pump to the fuse box just make sure there is power i had same problem on my vw they couldnt  read it with code reader so they checked wiring and hey pressto after 3 weeks of trips to different garages the stealership done it (but did cost abit) but not as much as pump (?1500 inc fitting)  8) 8) 8)
