Carb problems - HELP!
« on: 16 December 2008, 17:42 »
Car is a 1991 1.6 TX Jetta on a 2E2 pierburg.

So I've just bought this car last week - Thought I'd check over the engine and the carb had tons of play when rocking it. So much that I was very concerned about the condition of the rubber inlet manifold flange. I took the carb off and found this:

Well I got the old flange off no problem and replaced it with a new one. It all screwed down (with those metal clip things too) no problem. I connected everything back up on the pierburg that I'd taken off to get at it.. Then bolted the carb onto the flange correctly.

Double checked the connections off a list I made of what I'd unplugged, etc. so I didn't miss anything.

Now the car won't work!!

If I turn the key, the engine will rev up once to about 3k, then drop down and die. You can keep the engine going by holding the throttle but unless you keep the revs really high, it'll cut out! Pretty much have to keep the revs constantly over 3k or it'll just die out.

Checked the autochoke and everything seems to be fine. I just can't see what's different since all I've done is changed the rubber flange!

Any ideas? Desperately need to get it sorted so I can get her MOT'd! [:(]

The car was working great before I did this! Even if the rubber was knackered..

Check ALL the earthing point's. You may have knocked one loose.
Check any hoses for splits.
When was the car last serviced? It could be a serviceable part and thus by doing a service could be resolved.
Passat B5.5 2.3 V5 170, with all the extras.

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.
