Massive thanks for your help guys. Having spoken to the bloke that fitted it he assured me it is indeed a GTi box but one from a 2litre mk3 gti. Does this explain what i am now finding?. He advised holding the gears a little longer, so on the way home from work i did and it wasn't as bad as i first thought. Still not as responsive as with the old box....just looks like i'll have to adjust my driving style lol.
On the plus side, my new box has only covered 30K thus far so should be good for the life of the car now :)

mk2's use a rod change box

mk3 gti's have a cable change box, so in order to run that box in the mk2 he'd have needed to change the pedal box also. and i doubt he done this as it would be too much hassle

if i were you id get under the car sharpish and find out what code is stamped there

The mk3 gti 8v has got a rod change not a cable change.
Thanks to Blacky for the picture of his engine bay  :D

Gambit, thanks for that gearbox ratio link........very useful ;)

MK1_BOY popped round yesterday and we spent most of the day rebuilding a gearbox for him.......he went home last night with a nice new gearbox to fit to his rocket ;D

daros, get that code off your box.......that will reveal all ;)

CHD gearboxes where in 92-95 Golfs/jetta's

comparing the ratio's of an AUG box to the CHD, the CHD is slightly longer from 3rd onwards hence why you have to rev it further
