It'll be a vac hose more than likely, i did the head gasket on my digi and it was running rough and felt like it was gonna stall all the while, checked timing numerous times and eventually found it was a vacuum hose, there are a few of them so check inside and outside the engine bay.

wd40 hasn't worked no difference at all.  Have taken clocks out, checked all vacume hoses wires etc. its been suggested it could be an earth problem?. Are there any earthing points on the dash I could have missed off. Its idling at 500rpm was 950 before dash removal it then struggles upto 2000 then is okish past then but not right. Ive got it booked in at midland vw monday if all else fails  :cry:

Have you checked (rubjonnys suggestion) the ISV controller behind the centre console ??

yep tried that one no joy there, just cuts out when you unplug it so must be doing its job. can't understand this new dizzy though?
