Mk2 8V Idle problems?!
« on: 05 October 2008, 17:24 »
Arrrrrrrgh!
Advice at this point would be much appreciated. Iv got an idle problem on My 8v GTi where it fluctuates between 750 Rpm and 2000!
Iv carried out so many apparent remedies for this which have sometimes helped slightly but never truly cured the problem.
Soaked the ISV in petrol to clean out any crap....
Changed the mass air flow meter....
New spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor arm....
New airfilter....

I heard somewhere on the grapevine that cleaning out the throttle body can sometimes sort it! Does this sound farmiliar to anyone and if so how do i go about doing it?

Many thanks people!

Check the wires on the throttle body. They always break.

There is a throttle switch hidden at the bottom and the one at the top. check if they 'click'

Check for vacuum leaks and as said check the micro switches on the throttle body

Sometimes cleaning the ISV does not make a disfference if it is buggered.... Does it only happen in the morning or all the time.

Check Cold start valve,

Check your vacume pipes on you air intake pipe under the throttle body,

Check your timing.

Guys guys! thanks a lot for all your advice, will defo try the wires. I get a popping from my exhaust from time to time when slowing down so timing could well be the issue. Thanks again.

By the way racs.2008.......... It happens all the time really, never totally consistent though. And thats a sh!t hot 16 valver matey!

Try borrowing another ISV
My last one was on the way out got stuck at 2000 sometimes,
tried cleaning it and then it wouldn't idle at all, quick trip to the scrappy solved that.
