Juddering under braking. And gearbox issue.
« on: 26 September 2008, 09:36 »
Hi guys.

Just purchased a mk2 gti.

I have juddering under braking over 25mph. Maybe warped discs, but im thinking balljoint/bush issue?

Also. Im finding it hard to locate reverse, 1st and second. Sometimes fine, sometimes sticky, sometimes i cannot find it.

Does anyone have a guide to the linkage repair.
Thanks guys.

dont know about braking, but the gears sounds like you got gear linkage artheritis. A new gear linkage repair kit should help you sort the gears out.

juddering under braking could be signs the wheel bearings are worn. Mine juddered when braking and going over bumps/pot holes! Fine after they were replaced.

Could also be your missing a bolt from a caliper like I was when I first got my car...  :lipsrsealed:

As for reverse, could be the 'usual' gear linkage repair kit that's needed or the gear ball repair kit to sort that (most likely the gear ball kit - it's a pig of a job by the looks of it  ).
You can pick up the kits that include the gear and gear ball repair kits for under £20 on ebay sometimes.
While you're replacing the linkage, you might as well also get a weight shift rod from the MK3, usually £5 from a scrappy or speak to Rub Johnny he often gets these.

It's right under your nose http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33100.0

Rubjonny recommends genuine VAG over patern parts, so theses numbers are from a previous reply of his.
VAG Parts No's

191 711 574 - long shaft - £6.22+VAT
191 711 595 A - short shaft - 1.67+VAT

They're simple to replace, just flick the plastic clips open at each end, and pull off.

Your engine mounts may have a bit of play them too, there's plenty of info on how to find if there on the way out.

Mines also got some play, though I've never measured it ...

If there's a load of play in the clutch cable it could be that which is shagged, or the clutch itself.  Either way if you're not getting a full release of the clutch then this would cause engagement issues.  Check this before buying a pile of bits that might be unnecessary.
