i am not putting long life oil in mine on the next service its getting 10/40 fully synth as whats the point of long life oil if its changed every 10k not 20k as with long life oil
My theory is it must be better quaility oil if it last a lot longer better propert'ys and all that. It will give me that bit more reassurance  Its just the same as you imo your putting in better quality oil and changing regulary

Do NOT, under any circumstances, use a 10w40 oil in any modern petrol-engined VW - let alone a turbo'd GTI.  Fully synthetic or not, 10w40 oils are NOT approved by VW, because they don't meet any of their stringent oil standards.

The GTI should ONLY be run on the latest 504.00 LongLife3 oils, which were specifically designed for FSI engines.  The still current LongLife2 oils can also be used too, although if you need a 0w30 for arctic conditions, I would probably recommend Quantum Synta ED, which is a fully synthetic oil for specific high performance VAG petrols.

For more info on the subject, read my helpful sticky http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=65779, found in the maintenance section http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=59.
