perforated oil sump

Hi,

Investigating an on-going oil leak, apparently from nowhere, on my MkII Gti 8v, have noticed that the oil sump has a tiny crack in it towards the bottom at the front which is ensuring my garage floor is getting a nice coating of the black stuff. 

Two questions

- is the sump likely to come off a 20odd year old car without turning the bolts off and ruining everything?
- Is there a "quick fix" - some sort of sealant or patch - that could delay the inevitable or at least give me a bit of time get the relevant spares together?

1. yes it should come off easily. the bolts are usually coated with filth which will stop them being rusty etc, just make sure the socket is on there nicely.
2. no. you only need a sump and a gasket. sump is about £20 plus vat and gasket is about a tenner from www.gsfcarparts.com

Many thanks for the advice - I had a bit of a nightmare once trying to split the waterpump - most of the bolt heads just turned off.  Since then have been a bit wary.

Might aswell whip your oil pump out while you're in there aswell (only two M6 bolts) and give the strainer on the pickup a good clean. This should help keep the old oil pressure buzzer problem at bay.

i used chemical metal once to temp repair my sump until a new one arrived!! worked okay as long as its clean as a whistle first!
