mk1 problems

hi i av a mki golf gti 1.8 16v when i start it in the morning an whan i try to drive the thing ther is a dead spot when only cold an there is anuther problem when i stop at any time it revs up an down i av been told that that it could be the idle,speed valve.  as any one elts ad this problem or do any now what it could be thanks pip...

try using the search function, other people have had similiar problems, understanding theirs may help you understand yours.

Keep it specific to mk1, or possibly mk2 sections i guess if the engines are the same.

dead spot? as in hesitation on your acclerator? digi - lag?
flux on your idle...could be a variety of things.. the idle it's self, dizzy, rotor - have you serviced it recently? timing, air flow, fuel flow...tons of stuff.. as Han has said, if yours is a mk2 digi 16v, maybs having a search within the mk2 section would be more helpful?

mk2 16v is k-jet not digi As mentioned, it really could be a number of things, maybe a dodgy earth connection.

its ok...im a gonk.. you wouldn't think I had a mk2 engine in my car
plus i can't multi-task..  :embarassed:

hi  do the search as said look for idling problems, hunting,etc

idle control valve on rhs of intake manifold is worth a clean as is checking/replacing vacuum hoses, do these before anything else [nb vacuum hoses may look ok but replace them it saves a lot of grief]

look for loose breather pipes and clean all engine earths and electrical connections

then check/replace spark plugs/ignition leads/rotorarm and cap

get co2 checked and ignition timing

i found it was pointless doing co2 & timing before checking the other items

could be inlet manifold gasket as if this goes it leans off your mixture and send the revs funny.
