Problem solved!!

Changed the gaskets and also found there was an extra inlet pipe on the 50 mm inlet that wasn't on the previous 42mm inlet hence was suckin in air from there. It tickin over sweetly...

I just rebuilt my mates 16V engine, top & bottom, and started it up on saturday. It started first time but keeps stalling. If i rev it, it is fine but running rough. i've checked the timing and everything else seems okay.

Forgetting the original problem as you fixed it, but have you changed the injectors yet?

If not, change them as they wear out after 80-90k. Get the Bosch part and not the VAG part as they are identical in all but price. But the performance difference will be big. It made my rebuild.
