Differances between Mk3 and Mk2 springs
« on: 16 February 2008, 22:00 »
I bought some springs a while ago for my Mk2 Gti 16v and finally got around to fitting them today.

The lad I bought them off said he had them fitted to a Mk3, but were designed to fit a Mk2. Rear ones fit fine but the problem is the fronts don't fit correctly. The top of the spring has a smaller centre on the new ones so the upper spring plate does not fit inside the spring.

Im hoping that if I get hold of some upper spring plates from a Mk3 then that will sort it. Anyone got some/know if they would fit?

If not then its back on with the originals

the early mk3 till about 94 had identical springs all round to the mk2 (80mm pigtials on the front i believe) and changed in 94ish to 65mm pigtials and thats looks like what youve got!! the rear shocks and springs are the same whatever the year...

Do you know if I can just fit the smaller upper spring plates from a later Mk3 then?

The top mounts are different for the later springs...but if you have a friendly local factor you could see if some spring plates fit.... I've fitted larger springs using new top plates but not the other way round!!

Don't suppose you have the old smaller type knocking about?

Tried the wanted section but no replies.

Do GSF do them as they have just opened a new unit nearby so I could pop in at w.end?
