Dead amp
« on: 29 November 2007, 19:54 »
Hi All

It would appear that my current amp has given up the ghost.

I currently have 2 of these in a sealed enclosure

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-swr1222d-p-4573.html

Would I be best getting one of these? (possibly underpowered for the 2?)

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/alpine-mrpm850-p-5670.html

Or one of these to power them.

http://www.caraudiodirect.co.uk/orion-hccad2400-p-6171.html

They are wired in to show 1OHM at the moment. Any other recommendations would be most appreciated.

Cheers

Chris

I noticed that both the amps you listed are mono, were you thinking about getting one for each sub as I dont think you can or should run two subs off of one mono amp ? So you can either go for two mono amps or one two channel amp that can be bridged, it depends on your budget but I would consider something like this :-

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/3302.html

or this :-

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/2985.html

Or you could go for 2 of these :-

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/2986.html

or if you realy want to push those subs get a couple of these :-

http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/product/products_id/4552.html

To be fair it all comes down to personal taste and how much your willing to spend to get what you want !

I'm sure someone will correct me or provide better advice

Hi

Cheers for the reply and examples.

I don’t have masses to spend on it, as I have plans for the rest of the car, but would rather pay a little more for better quality gear. I like the idea of the 2 Alpine mono’s.

I thought it would be ok to run 2 subs from a mono amp as long as the subs are wired in series or parallel and not individually connected. Correct me if I’m talking crap here.

Also I was under the impression that one should match the sub’s RMS with that of the amp or the amp will be overworked. To quote the ICE Bible Thread “Use a bigger amp than necessary and run it gently.”
To put that adivce into practice the amps in the links you provided are underpowered. Once again correct me if I’m wrong.

Thanks again

Chris

In a ideal world you would over power every speaker but this can become a very pricey game depending on your set up, I'm running a 12 inch Vibe in a ported enclosure and the amp I have running it isnt up to the power handleing of the sub so I set the amp up with this in mind and it been fine for well over 5 years and provides ample bass. To be honest with you I would have thought that you wouldnt need to put 500 watts RMS through two of those subs for them to sound nice and meaty. As for the wiring of subs it was a mistake of me to say subs couldnt or shouldnt be run in series or parallel and after a bit of checking up I realize that series or parallel will be O.K provideing the amp can cope with the load and according to the car hi-fi book I've got parallel will give you the best sound qaulity unless you use an active cross over.

Sorry about the incorrect info in my previous post  :embarassed:

Thanks for that. not to worry, nice to know my knowledge of wiring has been confirmed. if i can i may aswell get the most out of em as im a bit of a bass fan.

So are you suggesting I go for a better quality lower powered amp or say for example go for that alpine in my first post as that gives 1000watt RMS @ 2ohm and rewire my subs to show a 2ohm load? I have never had alpine gear before so don’t really know how they compare to others in the same price range. Orion for example, for 10 beer tokens less than the alpine, gives 1200watt RMS at 1 ohm and there is a hifonix for £229 that will also give 1200 watt at 1ohm. Do you have any experience of any of those or other recomendations of anything that will give round about the same output?

Thanks again mate.

I dont have any experiance of the amps you've listed but I think it cant be a bad thing to have subs and amps from the same maker but to be fair I think its all a matter of personal taste. The head unit I have is a Alpine and its the best make of head unit I've ever head so I wouldnt have thought there other stuff would be that bad for the money !

just too add as long as the amp can support low enough ohms for the amount of subs you want to wire off it wire 100 subs to any amp if you want as long as you don't exceed ( go lower than) the amps rated ohm capability.
