Luckily these have been off recently so I'm hoping that won't be the case!

As said its a 21mm although just to confuse things VW will now supply you with a 22mm nut if you go for a new one!

You can get away with an ordinary socket head held with very tight mole grips with an allen key through the middle

The way I do it is with a spark plug socket, put a spanner on the flats and a decent hex bit thru the middle.  Go back to halfords, and look in their tool section.  You'll see a VERY handy 7mm hex tool with a great big handle on it :)

To refit the new VW 22m nuts (which you should buy since they're use once!!) use a lambda probe/diesel injector socket.  This is even easier becasue they have a nice big cutout in the side for your allen key :)

Edit: Also depending on the make the strut may have a 6mm or 7mm allen hole, I had 1 6mm and 1 7mm on mine

Oh another way we've done it in the past is to find correct socker, weld a small bar to it and hey presto you can turn socket and put allen key through the middle!

Done it!

I got the tool you mention jonny (although before I read your post!). It looks awesome and a quick spin seems to show the ride is about the same as it was on the 16v set up. Took 2 snaps on my phone down asda (I'm such a chav!) but they're crap because it's my phone and it's dark. Will take some daylight tomorrow.
