a bit spluttery

on my way home from work my car (89 8v gti pb) just seemed to get a bit choked up and spluttery it was running fine then i was sat in a bit of traffic oil temp was at 98 and then when i was moving i felt it happen and it ran like sh!t
there is a steep hill i turn up and it normally pulls fine in 2nd but tonight i had to drop down to 1st after about 10 feet and i could feel it holding back through the revs
all ideas and theorys as to what is wrong greatfully recieved cheers

How low on fuel was it  ? might have dragged some crap up from the bottom of the tank ?

half a tank mate but is returning 16.5 miles to gallon

If you suspect the fuel, don't forget the fuel filter!! Mine was manky  :embarassed:

all i know is that it does not do it all the time
so where is the fuel filter as i may as well change it and see what happens

should be a silvery looking large bake bean can (lines in/out at each end) under the rear of the car next to the main fuel pump, becareful when undoing the fuel lines as they are probably under high pressure!

How spluttery? Running on 3 cylinders spluttery? Could be an intermittent or weak spark somewhere.
