power loss
« on: 03 March 2004, 23:51 »
so I was on my way to work today. Pulled onto the bypass and planted it (like you do). Pulling 55mph in 2nd and doing 7200rpm when the limiter came in. nothing unsual there. so I switched up to 3rd and planted it agian, only I had no power  ??? The revs were still up there, but no power. so I switched back down to 2nd. the revs came up again, but still no power. so I pulled onto the side of the bypass and had a nose under the bonnet fearing the worst. Everything looked normal under there. Nothing was sticking through the block (thank f**k)

so I turned the key and it started back up. drove fine the rest of the way to work.  ???

Then decided to put some engine cleaner in the tank. then drove home. everything is fine until I open her out on a bit of a straight. then when I get over 65mph there's a weird noise. it sounds a bit like a dog scratching at your door wanting to come in. I think it's coming from the clocks, but I might be wrong.

I also had a look under the bonnet when I got home and the 2nd injector is fairly wobbly and the other 3 are slightly wobbly. Could that be the reason why it's been loosing power recently?

cheers guys (rich and '6 esspecially ;))

Hmmmm, what do mean revs were up there but no power? Surely if you had no power you wouldn't be able to get the revs up there, unless your clutch is slipping badly........I expect I'm missing something, it is nearly 3am.

I'm sure you already know the injectors are only a push fit so they do feel a little loose, however the rubber seal can become hard and brittle with age and eventually break up, so might be worth a look.

well the revs were still reading around 4000 in 3rd, but when I put my foot down there was nothing. I knew the throttle body was opening cos I've got a vacum gauge connected to it at the mo.

i don't think the clutch is slipping else it wouldn't drive right now would it?

hello mate - had a similar problem with a previous car and turned out to be the start of the bottom end going pop !!

The noise will travell to the top of the engine through oil galleries etc and given the angle of the 8v block could quite easily sound like it's the clocks.

Also gievn your 8v is modded to rev so much higher with more than likely only head / top end work - bottom end failure is a real possibility.

Would also explain the lack of power ...

I may be horribly wrong but GET IT CHECKED JUST IN CASE !!!!!

No its not your clutch........I just couldn't think of anything else at the time, I had an image in my mind of you getting full revs but no proportional response at the wheels.

Have you checked the injectors? Can be a pig to get out, especially if the seals have age hardened.

Just another more obvious observation, you hit the rev limiter and then changed down......is it possible the rev limiter is cutting in earlier now? Is your rev limiter incorporated into the rotor arm, can't remember when they stopped doing that. The springs in the rotor arms can weaken and cause just that........especially if you're now starting to cane that car, as imagine you probably will be with a nice new engine just round the corner ;)

it seems to be driving fine now. the only thing that seems to be weird now is the clocks are screaming and making a weird noise. I guess the speedo cable is due for replacement.

at this rate I'll be getting the new engine in 2006. They're taking their sweet ass time on find me one, and I'm running too low on cash. thinking of getting the deposit back and getting all the bodywork sorted and chroming more of the 8v for inters. I dunno.
