mk3 speakers
« on: 27 August 2007, 19:55 »
Hi all, i have a little problem.

I have some uprated speakers (17cm) to fit in the front n back doors

There is 4 wires coming in, and only 2 connections on the speakers

Which 2 wires do i join? Or which combination of wires do i join up?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

Andy

yeah, I had to think about this for a while when I first did it!

only one set of 2 wires will work, so just try them with a known working speaker and some small bits of cable wedged into the connectors temporarly.

the problem is figuring out which is +ve and which is -ve.

if you look at the bottom of the tweeter ( where the wires go into it) almost inside the pod itself you will see what looks like a tiny little red battery. this thing is in line with the +ve wire, from there you will be able to figure out which way around the wires for the door speaker should be because they meet at the tweeter.

OR!

another way is to look real close inside the connector on the speaker you remove from the door, it will be labled with a '+' but it is very hard to see, its inside where the connector comes out of the door speaker.

OR!

the final way would be to look at this... http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/VW-Wiring.pdf and it should tell you!

and on the new speaker, the smaller terminal will be the -ve.

Okay finally got round to fitting speakers today.

All the "bass" speakers now work but none of the tweaters work...not that it will make much of a difference if they did.

Is there a way to get them to work if at all possible?

Err, the tweeters should make an enormous difference - without them it will sound terrible!

Surely the "other" set of wires you found at the door speaker go to the tweeter.

*UNLESS* you've fitted co-axial speakers in the doors (full range), in which case you don't need to wire up the tweeters.

As said above, two of the original 4 wires actually carried the signal up to the tweeters, so that's why they don't work now (assuming you left them unconnected)

If you have components, you should take the two wires from the stereo, wire them into a crossover box, and then you get 2 wires for the woofer and 2 wires for the tweeter from that.

If you don't have components... as above, you don't need the tweeters.  If the sound is at all acceptable without tweeters then I'd imagine you don't have comps...
Sold the VR6... Now officially An Old Man With A Passat Estate.  At least it's a 1.8T

Nah i dont have comps im afraid, just some 2ways in each door...tbh the sound is quite good (compared to standard). I also have two 4" two ways in the dash which give off most of the treble tbh.

Thanks for all your help peepsĀ

jst thought i'd say, if you ever have trouble finding out what wire is which, get yourself a multimeter/digital volt meter and buzz away..
