Main bean "warning" light
« on: 31 August 2007, 04:57 »
hi all

has anyone ever replaced the blue LED that tells you your main beams are on?  i know its gonna be a dash out job *sigh* but i need to know if i need to de-solder it from a PCB, or if it just plugs in.  also, can anyone tell me where i can get one?  apparently if this light doesnt work, its an MOT failure

cheers

Mine doesn't work and it passed an MOT. It just got put as an advisory, but the guy said it would never be a fail.

Are you sure it's the LED that's failed? They rarely do when not exposed to voltages outside their rated range, I'd look elsewhere for the problem personally.

they do blow, had to do this job on my passat years ago, they are pennies from the dealers and just push in the mounts, good luck, the dash isn't that bad just take your time and it will be good.

its not compleatly gone tbh, its just really dim.  didnt make that clear, soz.  would this point to another problem?  a high resistance somewhere?  or maybe the LED is fitted back to front?

glad to hear its not a soldering job.

thanks for the comments

Mine's pretty dim as well actually, never bothered me though I have to say. If it was in the wrong way round it wouldn't work at all, also they don't half blow as it were, they either work or they don't so changing the LED won't fix the problem in your case.

being an electronic engineer i have to agree with the above post, if its dim changing it wont necessarily solve the problem.. bad earths contribute to dim leds..

anyways y the worry bout soldering, its a doddle
