Oil in distributor cap - help
« on: 22 February 2004, 16:01 »
 :o
I own a 1994 VW Golf CL 1.6 and was suffering from the car cutting out (total loss of power, rev counter 0, alternator and oil light on) at random intervals but after the car comes to a stand still it starts again straight away.

Since the car was due to have a service I thought I?d let a VW dealer find the problem (?47 for half an hour labour!!!) and fix it for me.  Apparently no error codes were found when they hooked the car to a computer but was told the throttle body needed cleaning (?90) and my distributor cap and rotor arm was worn and needed replacing (?65).

I later went to a garage (Bosh service specialist) who managed to clean the throttle body for a lot less then ?90. After the throttle body was cleaned the car has not cut out since (over 2 weeks now!).

I bought my self a distributor cap, rotor arm and a set of HT leads which I thought I could fit my self.  However when I took distributor cap off there seem to be traces of oil around the inside edge of the cap.  Silly question?is this normal and does it seem I may have a big problem on my hands now??? Any advice is welcome...
