As I am running in my engine and driving conservatively I am getting 38mpg
Mk 5 GTi, Tornado Red, Leather, Xenons, 18" Monza II's, Sunroof, 6CD in Armrest, Winter pack & Tinted Windows... soon to be adding ED30 front spoiler, plus R32 sideskirts... then getting fully colour coded!
New engine fitted when car was at 27k... last one went "noisey".

I can only dream of these numbers. Even when running in I was getting something like 9l/100km. Now the car has done 4600-odd kilometers, it's run in in my book.  Going fast it demands 13 litres. On average, with some city driving, I get over 10 litres.

yeah... my old engine was much less efficient... even when I drove it similarly... mind you that could be a sympton of problem that caused me to get it replaced under warranty...

In fact today, whilst going on a nice 70 mile drive just for fun (and to speed up running the car in) I hit the heady heights of 39mpg!! this was on A and B type roads in the somerset countryside!!  (running Esso 97 RON fuel)  Mind you I didnt take RPM much above 3000 (but also making sure not to labour the engine or stay at constant revs - lots of gear changing )
