need some help, bit of a novice
« on: 07 May 2007, 13:02 »
hi there newbie here always read but know i need help.  could someone out there help me set up my stereo system.

this is wat i ave at the mo.

Jvc head unit 45watt x4,
pioneer dual cone 13cm in my front doors and the tweeters on top of the dash,
(i believe there are xovers)
JBL gto 200 amp and 12" sub

pair of mk5 golf tweeters and pioneer 6x9 in the garage.

i was also thinking about JBL 6x4 for the rear shelf supports

I have a bit of money to spend if another amp is required etc. i dont wana cut up my rear shelf as it is standard and in very good condition (looks good).  i ave found how to make speeker pods through this forum and willing to give it a go.  im looking for very good sound, enough bass and If I could get good sound and loose the sub, that would be a bonus.

If anyone could tell me how to set the lot up (inc amp settings) and wat I should keep and wat to sell and wat to buy would be most appreciated.

Chris Carter

P.s its all going into a mk2 golf.

right deffo keep the componant set in the doors, and the sub. lose/sell the 6x9's unless you sit in the back of the car often and i really wouldnt bother with the rear 6x4's either, the money could be better spent elsewhere.

exactly what sub, amp and componants do you have? ( post some links! )

this will determine what amps you need and how to set them up, JBL amps are pretty good and may even be too much for your sub. you probably will want another amp anyway if you want decent sound out of your componants. one would do if cash was a problem.

another thing that would be helpful is to post a link to your headunit, if you can find one.

whereabouts in the country are you? ill help you with setting it all up when you figure out what you want to get, but its pretty easy, just a few things to watch for.

yep i would get hold of the other JBl amp and run the door speakers off it, but only if are you sure those speakers have seperate tweeters. i would try to find the crossover for them. I only say because im pretty sure these are not supposed to have tweeters with them and someone may have just added the tweeters afterwards.

sure they are not these?

if you can get them out easily, post back the wattages, printed on the magnet of the speaker.

your a bit too far for me to phisically help!!

my brother in law had that headunit and i think it has only one set of jack plugs on it which would unfortunatly mean you could only really run one amp off it, if it has two sets then there will not be a problem. can you get the headunit out easily? the jack plugs will look kind of like house arial cable and be red and white, if there is 4 thats good, two is not so good

no there are definatly those orange ones iv got one out whilst resealing the door after a new window reg been fitted.  ok so need new conponants, i was thinking about swapping it all to jbl anyway i like things to match all the way through,  my next door nieghbough has an amp for sale i'll ave that.

the headunit does have only 1 pair of phono jacks but iv spoken breifly to someone about it an said that i could get away with a splitter which will make 2 pairs, which i do believe that u cant control each seperately from the headunit do u think that would make any differance in sound if the 2 amp were set correctly?

thanks for the offer, u coming to me, to help. but these little chats are helping loads n i hope u can help to the end.

the sticker on the back of the magnet are:

" 120 watt max . 4ohm  25 watt nom "

if your going to stick with the speakers you have then you wont need another amp, the headunit will be fine as JVC units rock anyway.

if you did need some extra front sounds, which with your sub i would recommend then you 'could' get away with splitters to the amp for the componants but they are really only for sub useage because you will lose your stereo sound, which, for subs is unimportant but for componants it is, if it will bother you ( depends a lot on the music you listen to)

as for controling the splitters, just think of it like it is, you will basically have two left sides and two rights but unless your amps are very close together it will be hard to get the seperate lefts and rights into the amps because splitters arnt very long ( or at least mine arnt!) and most of them that ive seen go on the amp end of the phonos.

you can get splitters that work the other way round where they split at the headunit and you have two sets of phonos going down the car which would solve your problem, its just getting the right splitters for that can be a pain and the fact you need two sets of leads, if you use Ebay or other net shopping it shouldnt be a problem though.

if you need any clarification on the phono thing or anything  ill PM you my MSN address and ill help, it can get a bit confusing!

is the amp you have 2 channel or 4? ( does it have 4 speaker output terminals or 8? ) if it has 8 you wont need another amp, i should have said earlier. if its the exact amp in that picture you will need another though, but i know they made a 4 channel too, so thought i would just check.
