Rusty nuts & gooey boots?
« on: 16 April 2007, 09:02 »
It's MOT time, so I'm replacing the discs, pads & rubber brake pipes on my '90 16v GTi, when I notice grease has spewed out of the offside outer CV boot & covered everything..
As per usual, the "Paynes manual" has bugger all info on replacing the boot, so do I need to undo the hub nut, the 2 lower suspension strut mounting bolts, the tie-rod end, and the lower balljoint, or can I remove the driveshaft without using special balljoint splitter tools that I haven't got?
Any advice would be soooo welcome, ta..

Are you sure there is nothing in the manual? I don´t have mine with me at the mo, so can´t check it out. Look in the section headed ´driveshafts´. Follow the paragraph for removing/replacing CV joints. I´m sure its there.

section 8.1 of the haynes. you can undo the 3 bolts holding the bottom ball joint to the wishbone rather than removing the ball joint from the hub, if thats what your asking? or for the tie rod its best to buy a splitter, they don't cost loads and you'll use it again, so wise purchase. also you don't need to remove the two suspension bolts as the strut will hold the hub up and you have enough movement to get it out the way.

Thanks for that Mr.Pistonbroke & Joe, found a few useful guides on this forum but have decided to call it a day as there's no way the hub-nuts going to shift without a serious breaker bar! Also the brake pipes wont budge and may need to be replaced with copper ones, so too the front wheelbearings need replacing, calipers front & rear & Black Diamond disks & pads fitted
Gonna let my Dubmeister mechanic do the whole shebang as it's turned into a nightmare, while I sod off to Amsterdam for the weekend
