Anyone had this problem with the Power Steering?

Plenty of fluid and no odd noises but when at idle it's obvious that there is no power steering but with some revs it seems to kick in! Is the pump on it's last legs?

I've had similar prob with mine as I'm going to turn the steering locks and the battery light comes on then the engine goes to stall only happened 3/4 times in the last few months, would this be down to the same conclusion.
