knocking noise vr6

just bought a 95 vr6 and covered about 500miles, and there is now an awful knocking noise could this be the main water pump? are these prone to going.

Car has covered 140K.

I would like to remove the belt for the water pump and quickly check that the noise goes how do you remove the belt easily?

the noise is from the water pump. After the belt was removed the pump muved about 10mm up and down so the bearing must have collapsed.
