How to fit 'standard' boot mounted CD Changer?
« on: 07 January 2007, 16:14 »
Hi, guess this might be an easy one, for those of you guys in the know....me, I'm a bit new to Golfs!!

Just got a mint Mk3 gti 8v, 98 registered, done 23K miles!!! I'm chuffed to bits with it. But want to add a CD changer...like it would be stock fitted. It's got a Sony 6859 tape/radio head unit and it's got wiring through to a smallish silver box which sits under the nearside back light unit, under the boot lining there. The box has a 'din'-like input connector (sort of circular with 2 squarish pegs inside), where the existing lead is attached, and a vacant connector at the bottom, marked 'changer'. So, I'd guess this is the changer connection socket, BUT, what I'm not sure of is, what type of CD changer do I need (presume Sony) and where exactly does this fit in a standard boot mount? Can I get a new Sony changer compatible with this original system?

T'other thing is there's two free cables with phono sockets (red & black) taped to the existing incoming cable near this back box. I'd guess again these are for extra speakers in the back...am I right?

Any help would be gratefully received.

all the wires you talk about are for the changer, yeah you can get them, i picked one up for my father in law from a local scrapyard for £25, but this is the only place i know of to get them short of going direct to sony, but dont! in this case or any other than a cheap scrapyard you will be paying a small fortune for them, minimum £70. Sorry to put a downer on you but i have a suggestion,  Have you thought about replacing the stereo? new ones have mp3 playback and each mp3 disc can hold as much as a whole changer, without the inconvieniance when you want to change cds, because of this cd changers are becoming obselete. Just a thought for you but may not be suitable, but you have a pc so your halfway there! i have an mp3 headunit and it is really useful. pick them up from halfords, minimum about £100 now i expect.
