Water in rear footwell
« on: 14 January 2004, 18:47 »
My Mother drives a mk2 GTI which she has had from new (1985 I think), over the last few months the rear footwell has been filling with water and I can't find where it's coming from. Any one have any ideas? (I don't think it's coming from the sunroof although I would have thought that this is the most likely place).

the membrane behind the door cards (trims) will be leaking because it shrinkds over time, take the door card off and cut to size a new piece of plastic sheet, i used a builders bag from b+q, and stick it down securely on all sides with waterproof tape/silicone sealant etc. also unblock the drain holes in the bottom of the doors. it is worth doin this on all the doors cos being an 85 model they will all be the same

its the door membrains probabley rotted away check the bottom of the door cards if they are damp or you can see a waterline then thats the problem

just had both mine done at a cost of 50quid although you can do it yourself check some earlier threads on what to do this is a very popular problem :)
