16v 1.8 lack of top end power
« on: 26 February 2006, 19:19 »
I've got an '89 1.8 16v which is standard and has 100k on the clock. It
burns nor loses any oil. It has just had its vavles re-ground and the valve
stem oil seals done by VW.

It has loads of low end torque and is very lively low down the rev range,
my problem seems to be higher up the rev range where it seems to be
holding back. I had a 16v a few years ago and it seemed to be the other
way around, it would start to rev slowly and as the revs climed it would
feel as though it was revving easier. This one seems as though it's run out
of steam by 4.5-5k rpm. It will rev right round to 7k without complaint,
no pinking etc. but it just doesn't produce the rush my old one used to
and just seems to make more noise than go

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated

John

Probably worth getting the timing checked, according to the 16v guys on here 4200 is where it should start taking off!!

It sounds like its otherwise running fine so definitely check the timing- my '89 16v was one belt notch out for ages after I did the stem seals...its quite easy to get it wrong even for a pro (and i'm not )
If only my Volkswagen was as reliable as everyone else's...

What happened with this and is it the ignition timing you check or the cam timing you check?

Yeah seems bogged down as if it is overfueling still goes but not as fast, when i start it cold it splutters a bit and also seems to occasionally pop like a small backfire
