Amplifier Performance

i recently bought an Alpine MRV-T500 amp of ebay for £27!
i receieved it today and tried it out using one of those 12v adpater plug things. i then wired it up to a sub i had and connected it to my hifi. but when i played music the sound came out distorted on the sub and the there was hardly any bass coming from the sub at all just a lil amount. i adjusted the switches etc on the amp to the right setting and played around with the gain etc but still was the same.

Would this be because of the power supply?? because the wires coming of the adapter are about standard speaker wire thick lol. will it work better when fitted with a proper wiring kit or have i bought a F****d amp??

Was the sub in a box? or just sitting in free air?

all soprted nw tried the amp in my mates car and found out it was the wiring. needs proper amp wiring lol. so the amp works fine.
oh and yes the sub was in a box.
