Getting comfortable with the standard seats
« on: 24 May 2006, 16:42 »
Hi,

This my first post here - having introduced myself here: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=41164.0, so i hope this hasn't been discussed elsewhere already...

I picked up my wonderful Mk5 a couple of weeks ago and absolutely love it.  However, I'm still struggling to find a comfortable position for the driver's seat.  Am I really so weird that I don't suit it or have I missed something, I wonder?

To be more precise, it's the backrest that I have difficulty with.  For one thing, the bolstering at the sides is so deep and the bolsters so close together and so rigid, that it's a very snug fit - and I'm not a particularly large man - so there's very little "wiggle room".  But I think the main problem is support for the middle of my back, which seems to be lacking and is causing me backache.  The lumbar adjustment is too low to help if I sit upright as I would prefer although if I slump down more, it starts to support my back but I'm not sure this slumped posture is that back-friendly either.

With so much adjustment of the seat and the steering wheel, you'd think i'd find a good position, but so far not.

Anyone else had difficulty?    I didn't notice the problem on the car I test drove, which had the leather option - I'm wondering if those seats are a different shape?

Any ideas welcome.

Thanks

Alan

The leather has adjustable lumbar support so it moves up/down and inflates/deflates.  I would try using a small towel at the base of the seat, it may help.  I know exactly what your feeling, and that was one of the reasons we got rid of our Audi and also why we ordered the leather option....  I used the towel trick on long trips and it really works.....

Yes - thanks for that suggestion - I was thinking I'd experiment with that sort of thing.

Frustratingly, I'm recovering from an operation at the moment so can't drive at all.    My wife, seems to be enjoying the GTi though!  She usually drives a Beetle Cabrio and I'm afriad she's going to find it very dull after two weeks of driving mine.

thanks

Alan

Hey that's weird Doc!!  We had no lumbar support at all, which is why i hated it so much!!!  Well that and the steering...  After a 4 hour drive down to cornwall i'd be feeling it real bad, i do think they had a spec change at the start of '05 which would make sense...  The misses ordered her S-line before they knew the complete spec, ordered january '04 and delivered in the April..

The seats on the current Golf are fantastic, I just wanna drive drive drive

I agree the golf seats are MUCH better - you sit "in" them rather than "on" them!

PLUS the steering is DEAD in the Audi but Alive in the Golf
