8V 2.0 GTi Cam belt Failure
« on: 09 May 2006, 21:16 »
Hi Everyone,
First, what a great forum this is.
I have recently bought a 1992 8V GTi very cheap, as a project to do up.
Apparently the cam belt failed when idling. The previous owner had the belt replaced and the engine seems OK but is leaking water from the water pump so cannot drive far to test fully. I will be replacing this at the weekend.
The question is does this engine suffer valve damage or is it like the old Vauxhall 8V which is ok.

Many Thanks

Paul

Hi Big Guns!,
Thanks for the reply. Sorry to sound stupid but is the engine code the engine number?

Thanks Again

PB is the 1.8 mk2 engine.
Can't say if damage will occur, why not do a compression test? that should tell you for sure without opening it up!

Not VW specific, but If the water pump is driven by the cambelt , the re-tension of the new belt sometimes can knacker bearings/seals of the original water pump.

a Compression Test as previously stated is the first thing i'd look at.

Hi Everyone,
Had the engine checked over this weekend and apart from the ignition timing being quite far out all seems well.

Thanks again

The engine code for a 92 2.0L 8v gti is most likely to be ' 2E '  :nerd:
