have i blown my speakers, erm yes i think so!
« on: 24 April 2006, 21:55 »
well i have finished wiring up my front jbl components in the front and now after just listening to one side loud for a couple of days , the tweeter has started making a horrible screeching noise, i guess it ruins them just using one side as i hadnt got round to fitting other door card and speakers as i was fitting remote central while i was at it, or could it just be that i have wired up the wrong polarity? cheers
i must buy a new car!

it won't hurt only running 1 side at all. If the speakers were brand new you should run them in before cranking up the volume! Also running them off a small wattage supply will damage them.

Running them out of phase doesn't hurt them. sometimes it can be beneficial to run 1 like that to balance the sound out. If the one side of the car sounds louder than the other it's usually down to 1 being out of phase.

cheers for that i think what had happened is i forgot to insulate the connectors to the tweeters thus getting a loud screeching as if blown, seem ok today. So you think i need an amp to power them then? i just have a standard alpine head unit poering them up? thanks mate

It all depends on the power of your head unit, I've got a Alpine 9833R which I think is 4 x 60 watts and that sounds fine running front speakers but it all depends what you want to achieve with your system (i.e bass, clarity or volume e.c.t)

Ignore the headunit ratings as they are not rms.

If you want more volume and clarity then an amp is the way to go for the front speakers.
