Check the oil pressure switch.. Bet its that.. I had similar sort of problems with mine.. was totally sure it was the sump that was leaking.. The bottom of the engine was totally covered.. and i mean leaking alot. The oil pressure switch if i remeber rightly is onto of the housing that holds the oil filter on. i assum is the same for the 1.6 as it is with the GTI 8v. Pull the eletrically cap off and see if there is any oil there. the switches are dead easy to fit and very cheap! 2-3 quid.

Cheers

i brought my golf, and 300 miles later the oil warning system went mental, had to replace the oil pump.
while you have the sump off, whip off the oil pump, two bolts, make sure its all clean (the fliter for the pump gets clanked up) and give the sump a good clean. do it while you can access it............................
new boy to the vw world, cos i got me a golf gti mk2 8v
need to do a bit of work on her though.............

I'm doing mine on staurday so if it goes according to plan I'll try and get some photos up. Anybody got any advice on doing it ;)
Got a new sump and rubber gasket, 21 new bolts in case I lose one ;) thinking of taking out the oil pump and cleaning it up.
Any advice welcomed

well the haynes tells you how to check the oil pump, so it might be worth looking at that.  Also from bitter experience I'd advise you change your oil cooler at the same time.  Mine went straight after and dumped a load of oil in my coolant

a couple of the bolts at the back of the sump are a tiny bit of a faff. you need a long socket extension and even then they dont go in exactly perfect, take it easy so you dont round them off or anything other than that its pretty straight forward. the plastic try thing may be brittle tho (inside) so be carefull when pulling it off
