MFA trip computer faulty + engine rattle
« on: 02 March 2006, 00:04 »
Hi there people. Just bought a Mk3 Golf GTI; great car, really pleased with it but for just a couple of things. When driving down the M6 the other night, the Trip Computer (MFA) display decided to completely switch off, just died! How do I get it back working again? The mileage reading on the other display also has a bar missing on one of the numbers, so it might be an electrical fault on the whole instrument panel? There's not a fuse for those displays either as far as I know?

Also, there is a slight rattle coming from the engine when I accelerate, generally up to 3500 revs, then its quiet. I'm hoping its not the timing chain, any ideas?

Cheers!

Fuse number 21, 15 amp. It runs the MFA, interior lights, cig lighter, central locking, clock,. Mines been playing up with the cold weather. Someone had put a 10 amp fuse in!!!! I replaced it with the correct 15 amp and its been fine since.

probably the heat shield on the exhaust downpipe. common problem, hard to fix. some have ripped it off, some have put jubilee clips round it, some have hit it with a hammer, others have just lived with it.

Thanks for the suggestion about the heat shield, I'll check that out. I could live with it I suppose, as long as its nothing serious.

I just tried replacing the fuse. It had a 15Amp fuse in it already and even when I replaced it, the display was still blank. So no joy.

not serious , just annoying. It may well just dissappear , mine did, twice. touch wood.

MFA sounds like an auto electrician job unless a VAG com or fault code reader can diagnose it.

good luck.
