The nuts will almost always be completly fused to the studs and will come out complete, which is handy as you'll want to replace them with new studs and copper nuts.

But on a carb engine the o'ring in the inlet manifold will almost always have been leaking coolant onto the exhaust manifold and the 2 nuts beneath, handily one of those nuts is the hardest to get to! I managed to get 7 of the nuts/studs out no bother, but the last one was completly rusted solid into the head, in the end I had to use my dremel to cut the head off the stud and then had to take the head off & drill the stud out.
Try a stud extractor first, but it just sheared off when I tried

Don't worry if you end up having to take the head off, it really isn't that difficult and actually works to your advantage as it gives you tons of room to slip the downpipe in without having to drop the subframe, and also gives you the opportunity to clear out all the waterways, mine were almost all clogged up and my engine ran much cooler afterwards

Let us know how you get on with it!
