I'm the same as you Andrew, never had an issue with any of the VW navigation units I've had. They are kept up to date which maybe others can't be bothered to do. Once it's set up correctly it works perfectly. Once speed cams are added etc it's even better. I found Waze to be complete tosh.

How do you add speed camera info? I have updated maps recently - 2016 PP with Standard Nav unit and Dynaudio.

Is there a thread somewhere, did a quick search for 'speed cam', but only this thread came up.

Thanks

exactly my point, well said!

Given that my Golf is a business tool, my arrival at the destination on time is critical to me.

If you are out for a Sunday drive or whatever, VW Nav will get you there (in the end).

BTW my Mk7 had NavPro and was a massive dissapointment vs the money I paid.... it didn't deliver what the VW literature promised. I have NavPro on my current Mk7.5 too - but it has live traffic data (finally) but as I suspected, half the problem was a rubbish pathing mechanism and that remains. Luckily I have a lovely big screen to use with AA and Waze now.... so it does kinda fix it but £1500 for a screen that isn't exactly an expensive component in 2017 is taking the mickey.

I am also interested in this but seem to recall that it requires a subscription to gpsworld or similar to get the update file?

It only works on newer MIB2 units, can't remember when those came in - maybe late 2015?

Yes you obviously need a data source for your camera locations.

You also need to update them regularly...by hand.

And finally the "warning" you get is a subtle VW bong noise and its trigger about 100m from the camera, which at "making progress" speeds could well be too late, especially if its a forward facing camera.

Its pretty poor overall - not what you imagine you are getting!

Wrong Fred, I've had speed cams on every VW sat nav from rns510 to mib1 nav pro and now on mib2 nav pro. A friend of mine also has them on his discover nav. By manual if you mean pop an SD card in and update then it's hardly a hardship! I get two updates a year because speed cams rarely change. I've got the bong turned off because the cam shows on the screen and it's far from poor really Fred. Simple 5 minutes is all it takes 👍

Its the 21st century!

We shouldn't be updating maps and POI locations by hand - that's what computers and the internet are for...

I want to be able to seamlessly drive my car, not fanny around with remembering to fetch an SD card and copy files onto it.

I also don't want to be staring at a map to spot cameras - I have a big widescreen display I can look for them on - its called the windscreen. It only has value if it can tell me about them through audio, better still, only tell me about them if I am going (ahem) 1 or 2 mph faster than the speed limit.

Its not even as though I am talking about some strange new 5G feature that will appear on Tomorrow's World, its here now.

I believe the Mk8, like the new BMW's will receive map updates over the air rather than the cranky rubbish we have now which is only half a step beyond having to stick a new DVD into the nav unit.

Car makers are massively behind the technology curve - always have been because they work on 5 year life cycles for everything. Whereas computer technology moves much faster.

I might be old, but I understand this much!

Car makers being behind is very true Fred but I like the fact I update my own maps and put my own speed cams on 🤷‍♂️

Thanks - any particular ones you would recommend on ebay? As an alternative, do you mind me asking which ones you buy/subscribe to?
