pedal box - questions
« on: 10 December 2019, 10:20 »
Hi guys,

I've had the GTI for about 18 months now, and still love it, but one thing that i'm not so enamoured with is the pedal response. Mine is a DSG and it seems there a real dead spot in the first part of the travel, then it picks up. Not sure if this is how they all are or not, but i'm really starting to get quite fed up with it.

I know a few of the members have have fitted pedal boxes, so a few questions please ?

  • Does it actually work and give a much more linear response to the pedal feel ?
  • Are they hard to fit ?
  • I understand there a quite a few settings, so is there a preferred one for general "day" use ?
  • Are they insurance friendly. I'd obviously have to let me insurance company know if I got one (direct line), and we all know that they add no extra power whatsoever, but do they understand what they are or do they add considerably to the insurance costs ?
Thanks in advanced.

There are about a million threads on this forum about this!

Yes it works, no its not hard to fit, yes some people prefer a milder setting...

Biggest issue is insurance...

Basically, on any given day your insurer may refuse it or hike the premium or not.

I'd check it out with your current insurer before you buy the box and bear in mind that once you have modified the car you then enter into a whole different world of shopping for insurance renewals - or ditch the mod.

No-brainer. Fit one.

I unplugged mine from my old Mk7 R in about 10 minutes. When I picked up the new one (Mk7.5) and drove home, I thought the engine felt really "tight" and unresponsive. A couple of days later I plugged the Pedal box into the new car (again, about a 10 minute job) and suddenly all was well. Car is responsive again - and I keep it on a relatively low setting. If you need instructions there are several videos on You Tube.
Insurance is a bit of an unknown. Always notify your insurer, but some will charge, others not. I'm with Admiral and they charge me £25.00 per year. - and it's worth every penny! Call Direct Line and talk to them. Stress that it does not increase engine power. They may not charge.
