Really helpful reply Gnasher, thank you.  I agree about the 8.5 inch wheels, cheers.  For the 8 inch ones, the BBS configurator has ET of either 45 or 50 which is a bit confusing - I imagine the ET45 will give 5mm more "sticking out" or have I got that the wrong way round - I'm no expert!?

Yes, you're right.

Try this website - it's dead handy for checking what changes new wheels would make...

and with my 19's data added (from the OEM Austins)...

Thanks for the link Gnasher . I'll have a look at it tonight.

Well I'm set on the BBS SR in the himalaya gray just need to decide on the size I'm thinking 8×19 . Would I be right in thinking that BBS have the same weight as the OEM Austins ? 11kg?

If you go from a 7.5" wheel with an offset of 50 to an 8" wheel with and offset of 45 then not only will it be sticking out an extra 5mm but also 1/4"(half the extra width of the wheel) so you have to take that into account.

Correct fitment for the Golf (in 19") is 8.5 x 19 ET 46 - at least I hope it is, that's what's on mine lol.

When you say correct what do you mean correct for, to fill the wheel arch or what is correct for the Golf? 19" wheels on the GTD and GTi are 7.5" wide and either 50 or 51 offset(can't remember) and the R is 8" wide(not sure about the offset) but none of them are 8.5" wide.

8.5" ET46 will be what BBS have submitted to gain TUV approval for the Golf mk7

So yes, you're correct, that's the optimum fitment BBS have decided to run with to fill the arches rather than them sticking with OEM offsets and widths which sit too far into the arches.
An educated guess here but we see lots of mention of 7.5" Santiagos buckling, yet no mention of 8.0 (ET50) Pretorias buckling. BBS have probably plumped for an 8.5" width for strength and ET46 will sit them nice and flush.

Ta Ex - similar to what I was going to say (but you probably put it better)!

I can vouch that they're strong as my pothole exploits have proven.

Just remembered about the weight thing - I reckon they're a fair bit heavier than the standard Austins though. Good job I didn't buy them to increase performance. The more expensive wheels from BBS (CH etc.) I think are a lot lighter.

BBS themselves list them as fitting the Golf, although they don't state which version.

However I can definitely vouch they fit.

I reckon they are pretty strong too (as a quality wheel should be). I hit a pothole hard enough to burst the tyre and all it did was take a tiny chunk out of the rim - absolutely no distortion in the rim and they're 19's.

It's the version SR 028 on page 4 of the application list... http://bbs.com/pdfs/produkte/SR_2016.pdf

Any issues with the TPWS?
