Trip computer going nuts! Help!
« on: 12 February 2016, 21:20 »
Hi fellow GTI'ers,

Need some help. Was driving the GTI on local roads tonight and noticed the mpg on the trip computer going mental. Kept changing from 200 mpg down to zero, kept doing it over and over. Normally it settles down after a few minutes driving but it just kept winding down from 200 mpgs.

Has anyone else experienced this? Wondering if it's software or a mechanical fault i.e. Sensor.

Any advice would be mucho appreciated!

There are 2 settings for mpg in the computer in my car; instant and accumulated for the distance driven. If you've got it set on instant, then it does continually change - the degree of change depending on how hard you're accelerating or whether you're decelerating.

Do all of the other functions in the computer work OK?

Yeah, it's the instant reading that's going nuts. Before it would fluctuate around 20-40 mpg and then setting s around 30 once I've been driving for more than 5 mins. Now it like starts at 200 mpgs and then counts down to 0 over and over.

You need to switch it off 'instantaneous mpg'

Sounds like you've knocked the switch from average to instantaneous

I know when you press the ok button it cycles between to two, I saying even for the instantaneous reading it's going mental. Usually, it takes a few mins before stabilising, usually around 28 mpgs. Now it starts at 200 mpgs and drops to zero and repeats over and over. Just looks like it's on the fritz, will have to take it into VW to have a look. Luckily still under warranty :)

Or is there a third mpg reading that I don't know about Rhyso?

Have you tried a complete 'reset'...everything back to zero? Mine has a specific button for that function,

Or unhooking the battery for 20 - 30 mins?

What happens when you touch the accelerator when viewing this reading?? Different positions will give different readings

Within each trip computer (you have 2) you should have
Distance
Time
Average speed
Average mpg
Instantaneous mpg

Cycle through the menu

It's def the instantaneous that's on the fritz, all other readings look fine. Will check if the way I drive has any influence on the reading. I think it's prob a sensor of something coz I'm not driving any differently to before and it never did this!
