If AH is on, and you select P AND switch off the ignition, the parking brake is then applied automatically.

Likewise, I know that, that's how I have my car set up normally and why I didn't REALISE I had to apply it manually if auto-hold was off. I can't wrap my head around why the handbrake isn't applied when you're in park. If you're parking, handbrake on. When would you want something different?

The only time I turn Autohold off is when I put the car into the garage, especially when it’s been washed and the brakes are wet. The parking brake has a tendency to stick on when applied to cold, wet discs. At worst, I have found it difficult to release the brake, needing a lot more revs than is comfortable to do so in the confines of a garage. Also, Autohold makes manoeuvring in tight areas more difficult than necessary, so I knock it off to drive the car into the garage and just use the footbrake to control movement.

Similarly, the only time I turn autohold off on my DSG Alhambra is when parking in the garage-space is tight with my mountain bike ahead of me- the autohold will trigger when you creep forward slowly with the foot on the brake, so i have to turn it off.
Wouldn't trust the wife not to wreck my bike and bumper, so it's my job every evening!
Works brilliantly on my manual GTI- never turn it off.
