Well said Ms B

Unlike with the mk6 there has been a big migration to the mk7 R
In the mk6 days the R looked better but the GTI seemed to stay in everyone's affection and with the easy retrofits and tuning the mk6 GTI scene stayed very buoyant on here.
There was big GTI love on here in the early mk7 days but with the long waits and a big migration to the GTD added to the TD1 scares and difficulty of retrofits (nav locked to chassis, good standard spec, alloys difficult to better factory fit style wise) seems to have meant those looking to upgrade have simply upgraded  the whole car instead of bits of it!
This time next year all the talk should/will be about the Clubsport but in the meantime it would be good if GTI and GTD owners posted up their modifications and experiences and turned the forum away from its current R bias.
Most R owners are ex GTI owners (the ones on this forum that is) so still have a lot of love for the GTI and GTD.

Agree completely with your wise and truthful words Mr Ex. Would be great if this section could become more balanced across GTI/GTD/R. (Not GTE, lol).  But please don't cast us R owners out completely.  This place has a more organic, freer dynamic to the 'other' forum, and is a great place to be.

The R I'm quite happy with as a standard car (give or take), just in case anyone remotely cares.

I care.  And that makes at least two of us quite happy with standard R's.

I wouldn't give you tuppence for a GTE though (metaphorically speaking).

Well said.

Better sling my R hook from this thread now........

I have been a member for a while on here, it all started out with my Ed30, I then migrated to various cars, the best being my S-tronic TTRS.

I then had a couple of years in the BMW stable with a 125d (new work meant lots of miles)  - 215 horses with torque to match, now that used to embarrass hot hatches.  Including GTi's, type R's - the amount of times I was asked 'is that a diesel?'.........  The car was not too bad, but I always yearned for another VW.

I looked at various VAG offerings and settled on a DSG GTD.  I ordered it in April and collected in sept.  Ordered the options with a big pen, so it is fully loaded.  I am really happy to be back.

During the wait, my work has changed, do I wish I had ordered the GTI? Probably.......

Av still got my GTI had it just over a year. Don't get me wrong it wansn't without its problems when new but I have a special bond with the car and still get a big smile I my face when driving it everyday. Just clocked 12k miles and am so glad I got the GTI instead of the gtd as its a great all rounder and still delivers 40mpg everyday on my commute to work so can't complain.
Having had audis for the last 8 years previous to the golf I think a need to go back to my roots for my next car hence the reason am thinking RS3 or a new B9 S4. The RS3 has a waiting list of around 6 months and the S4 doesn't come out till next year so I will see what takes my fancy in the new year

I'm a newbie but I'm hoping to be around for quite a long time. I've never owned a GTI before and I'm starting to wonder why. I've done less than 100 miles so far and it's utterly brilliant.

Two years in, I have no regrets about my choice of car...but if I could have waited for the R to become available, I really would have been tempted as I have owned 4 Audi Quattro cars (3 TTs and a V8 S4 - some may say the only "real" Quattro as opposed to the Haldex motors).

Apart from some Discover Pro problems which were fixed by a firmware upgrade and a sunroof rattle, which only occurs when fully closed, the car has been generally faultless.

Had I test driven a car with PP or leather I would probably have ordered both of these too...but as it is my highly specified car makes a change to an R rather unappealing to me due to residual considerations.

I am here for a least another year, and I optioned the 5 year warranty as an antidote to my habitual car changes, which normally happen at 3 years...and as I run two vehicles, this happens most years.
