Considering a mk6. Anything to watch?
« on: 19 May 2015, 16:23 »
Looking at a mk6 as my new daily. The mk2 is getting pretty tired of daily duties...

But anyway, will be looking at a manual Gti, with somewhere in the 50-70k range on the clock. It will be 3 doors.

Are there any things I should watch out for? Common problems or anything? I don't know a great deal about them, other than them being by 3rd favourite Gti *cough*
It's a mk2. Fill it, drive it, enjoy it.

Good choice   Are you still keeping your mk2 as well?

Main thing to be aware of is the timing chain tensioner issue, see this thread:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=262793.0

Seems to so far have mainly afflicted '09, '59 and some '10 plates.  There have been 3 design revisions of the tensioner, as follows (quoted below from Snoopy):

"There was a revised tensioner fitted from engines built from 17 May 2010
A second revision of the tensioner from engines built in December 2011.
A third revision of the tensioner from 01 May 2012."

Don't let that put you off

Thanks for the reply! The forum is looking super dead at the moment

The Mk2 would be staying with me. Well, put this way, the mk6 won't be joining me if the Mk2 has to go. It's the old gal, or both.

For them still to be revising it into 2011 it must have been pretty bad, is there any goodwill come back or anything is you get issues on an out of warrenty car? I'll read that thread now

Yeh forum is quiet!!
Try to buy a car on warranty as that's only way you have piece of mind if buying a 2009-2011 model. You can always fit the later part yourself but I would just buy a 2009-2011 model with warranty and at least you are covered.

If you get a car with diamond cut alloys (monza shadows 18inch) check the condition as the lacquer can turn white and bubbly and they are expensive to refurb in similar style to original.

Good luck with your search

Glad to hear you're keeping the mk2

VW will not acknowledge that there is a timing chain problem, despite issuing 3 revisions of the part

If it does go bang, VW usually cover the cost of the replacement engine (all the while still refusing to acknowledge the problem!)  However, if you read the entire thread you will see that people have had varying degrees of success regards contribution to labour costs, and that is often down to goodwill on the part of the dealership.  So, as said, look to buy a car with a warranty. It would be madness to buy an earlier mk6 without one. If budget permits look at 2011 plate onwards.

And yes, watch out for whiteworm on diamond cut alloys.  A diamond cut refurb involves a specific process using a special lathe, a decent refurb costs around £80 per wheel for 18".

Unlikely budget will stretch to 2011. Looks like I will be getting a warranty! Or a Scirocco. Some of those repair bills are eye watering, especially considering these cars are fully serviced and it is clearly the fault of VW. Start to see why they don't follow the Korean's with their outrageous warranties

Waspy, I have just put mine on Sale here. Sorry it's a five door though. And 31,100 miles with full VW History. The most important thing is the timing chain tensioner issue. Mine has been upgraded by VW so no issues if you are interested.

My 3 door red manual with mint and unkerbed Monza's is possibly up for sale. Cruise, touch screen radio, full VW history up until I bought it when it got serviced better than VW would. Timing chain tensioner swapped for latest revision. (I wrote a 'how to' on the tensioner thread). Oil change every 5000 miles. Pilot sport tyres, absolutely immaculate car. 66k miles. I want 11k for it.
