White smoke can still be oil, not always with a blue tint, the smell is distinctive if oil is unburnt. My TT turbo failed (hybrid - 320bhp) and that was white smoke.
Golf went Wednesday, oil issue, was white smoke, can smell oil so distinctly, it's like when you decat you get that smell of petrol except its an oil smell.
As for oil issue, work backwards. Check turbo over, if its fine, no signs of being caped in oil and oil is in manifold you know its not the turbo, step two would be compression and/or leak test that would rule rings or valves out. If not that then its more than likely a PCV blockage, also known to cause oil burning issue and sapping oil into the intake and causing smoke. (or work the other way, whatever is easiest to do first, mechanics is a process of elimination at times).
Look out for other signs, if you're not using any coolant and the smoke is white then you know it's not coolant or a head gasket issue.
My golf issue which happened wednesday i thought was the turbo, turned out to be a blocked breather as catch can was full like a daft twit and it was sucking up that gunk into the TIP burning out oil in the process.
