Had thought about walking or cycling but at 6am I am not really keen on it, especially in pitch black winter darkness.

Bus was my other option.....but it's a bus.....

I will have to pay for parking but it could come as a package with the season ticket.

Might get a cheap station car.....

Bus it in the winter months, walk/cycle in spring summer months.

I got rid of my GTD for a five mile commute, a one mile commute will kill it. The DPF will not like it at all. Also the GTD barley registered the oil temp in the 5 mile commute the mk7 R on the other hand it nearly fully warm in the same distance and this is in the winter.

When you mentioned the "one mile commute will kill it" now i'm worried!

Generally engines that don't get warm, will sludge up. The water condensates in the inside and eventually you end up with crappy oil. As it doesn't get hot for the water to evaporate, I expect if you took it out for longer runs at the weekend it should be ok. The other thing that wont like it will be the battery, they say it takes 7 miles to put the charge back after starting it.

You need to change the oil and filter more often for short journeys when the engine does not get fully warm. On an 8 mile commute it does not get fully warm so I change it every 6 months even though I regularly also do longer trips.

Just found this out to my cost - 5 years and battery on its way out so £60.00 for new one with 5 years guarantee

My daily commute used to be in the region of 100-130 miles depending on the office i was working out of, however with a change in job and my office being so close to the station in Basingstoke and only a 25 minutes journey i could easily catch the train. It would however require me to use public transport - which i hate!!

I have to concede once a week when i work out of a clients office in Reading and hate the inconvenience of paying nearly £20 return and having to stand both ways.
